ABOUT THE SSIFI

The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute (SSIFI) has been working collaboratively with the island’s farmers since 1895. Our mission is to support agricultural preservation, development and sustainability.

We are home of the Salt Spring Island Fall Fair and are a versatile venue known for hosting weddings, reunions, workshops, and other local events. The SSIFI is located at 351 Rainbow Road. AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute promotes the theory and practices of agriculture through:

  • Workshops

  • Circulation of localized information

  • Educational forums
     

Provides the facilities and property for the enjoyment and use of the community through:​

  • Events such as workshops, rallies, and festivals
  • Board Meetings and AGMs

  • Community and private functions such as reunions, weddings, and parties​

HISTORY

The Salt Spring Island Farmers' Institute, earlier known as the Islands Farmers' Institute, was established in 1895 as the Islands' Agricultural and Fruit Growers' Association. The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute encourages the preservation of Island agricultural heritage and community involvement in all projects.

The Salt Spring Island Farmers' Institute continues to own 10 acres of property for community use which includes:

  • Exhibition halls

  • Livestock buildings and show rings

  • Museum

  • Outdoor stage

  • Vendor and exhibitor booths

  • Accessible parking​

The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute respectfully acknowledges that we live, work, learn, and play on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, specifically the Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN-speaking Peoples.
