Agricultural Land Use Inventory

Over the past 11 years the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands has worked with a number local governments to develop agricultural land use inventories for their associated farming areas.

A variety of maps and statistics can be created from these agricultural land use inventories, including primary land use activities, agricultural land use changes, and activities along the urban-rural edge.

The Ministry has developed a series of tools to assist local governments that are interested in conducting a land use inventory. These tools include an Access database and coding system for recording information and a 40-page guide on the land use inventory methodology.

More information on the land use inventory process is available from the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands.

Over four weeks in September and October of 2006, an agricultural land use inventory was conducted for Salt Spring Island. The data and maps from this survey will be considered in the Plan to Farm process. An initial analysis of the data and maps will be available at the first Community Dialogue session in January 2007.
